About this site

I'm Ricky Yeo, an Australian investor. I built this site after finding out I had been paying more foreign tax on my dividends than I needed to.

Why it exists

I own Ferrari shares. It took me a few years to notice that the tax withheld from the dividends was the full foreign standard rate, not the lower rate that Australia's tax treaty with Italy allows. I couldn't find clear information about how to claim the difference back.

My broker had no idea and pointed me to the W-8BEN, which is a US form and doesn't apply to Ferrari. I asked on a Ferrari forum and on the ATO Community. Eventually I was pointed to the Italian tax authority, and then it took a lot more research to find the right form and work out the steps.

This site and the guide are what I wish I had found at the start.

What's here

How the rates are researched

The rates come from published sources, which are listed on the checker page. They are labelled "researched" because I haven't yet confirmed each one by filing a claim in that country. Italy is the claim I'm working through myself, and I'll say so on the site when a country has been confirmed by a real claim. If you spot something that looks wrong, please tell me.
